Just as with LOs, the idea behind an EML its not only to allow computer applications to interpret an EML script, but also to promote the reuse of successful units of learning descriptions and also to allow the exchange of these units between different e-learning applications without taking into account how the target information system implements the semantics of the EML. In (Koper 2000) several desirable characteristics for an EML are identified.
