Farmer, David Noble, and Robert Tapp, who have been on both my prelim and dissertation committees. I am also deeply indebted to Dagmar Getz from the YMCA Archives for her gracefulness, resourcefulness, and consistent help. I have learned from her what an invaluable role an archivist plays in the works of researchers. A Fred C. Andersen Foundation predoctoral fellowship (199192) from Carleton College, and an Andrew W. Mellon postdoctoral fellowship from Emory University helped me a great deal toward supporting my family while I engaged in this work.

My research suggests strongly that, at least in the China of the 1920s, the relationship between Christianity and communism was one of competition rather than of intrigues or conspiracies. As competing ideologies, the reformist Christian social gospel movement and international communism had equal chances of acceptance in China and underwent the same tests of Chinese political and intellectual conditions. The historian Maurice Meisner, in Mao's China and After (1986), developed the thesis that Mao's communism is a sinified Page 18 version of communism, and that alone accounted for its success in the Chinese agricultural society.

Before this comparison could be made, the popular Bolshevik instigation thesis should be examined here, too. First propagated by the missionaries, the Communist conspiracy became a powerful thesis for American efforts in China. This conspiracy motif is not unfamiliar to students of American history. Charges of subversion have been used with good effect against Masons, abolitionists, Catholics, blacks, Jews, Fascists, and Communists throughout different periods. Now, with the advantage of hindsight, it is clear that both the social gospel ideology and communism were Western ideologies alien to the Chinese culture.
