I will be discussing these works in detail in subsequent chapters too. I turn now to a discussion of the main theses of Being and Event. 28 Badiou’s Philosophical Background What I hope has become clear from this survey is that there is a remarkable unity to Badiou’s philosophy, despite the presence of two different ways of approaching his main topic, which is a theory of the subject – one through dialectics, the other through mathematics or set theory. As I claimed in the introduction, Badiou is trying to bring together a formalism and a theory of change (an “intelligence of change”).

Historical materialism can do without a classical theory of the subject in its approach to history. The subject in philosophy always had something to do with the consciousness of individuals; historical materialism, however, explains the movement of history not in terms of what people think and know about their situation, but in terms of the development of supra-individual economic, social, and political forces, with labor power and technological innovations being key to their changes. From the perspective of historical materialism, it is productive activity that is the true motor force of a society, a nation, and international capital, ultimately developing to the point at which class antagonism no longer needs to be a definitive feature of society (communism).

The claim that this void, presupposed by any situation and also subtracted from any situation, coincides with being qua being still needs to be justified better, and it is only by looking at what Badiou learns from set theory that this can be done. For Badiou, being qua being is a pure multiple upon which certain operations happen, which create situations that are characterized by their construction and organization of a bunch of multiple-ones. Ontology can be said to study the laws of composition for any organized multiple – that is, any multiple that is not strictly identical to the pure multiple.
