IgA is the predominant immunoglobulin of the mucosa. It is contained in the secretions of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts (Krug, Tschernig, Holgate, & Pabst, 1998; Pabst & Tschernig, 1997). IgA is also found in salivary glands, tear ducts, and mammary glands. Nonetheless, the immunological function ofthe intestinal wall can only be understood if it is recognized that macrophages, many mast cells, and granulocytes are present in the lamina propria, a site which is densely innervated.
Effect: Within one or two days the local immune system is supported by these effects. (Right) Induction of the specificimmune response. Uptake of local antigen by dendritic cells --? migration into the draining lymph node via afferent lymphatics. Destruction of the aft'erent lymphatics prevents the induction of specific inununity showing that the induction of a specific immunc response almost always is initiated within lymphoid organs. Presentation a/processed antigen by dendritic cells to naive T lymphocytes which continuously and randomly enter the lymph node in large numbers via specialized blood vessels (high endothelial venules).
Since germinal centers are only generated when Band T lymphocytes collaborate, the presence of germinal centers also clearly shows that the molecules necessary for this interaction are present and functioning. Thus, looking at a histological section of a lymphoid organ already provides clues as to which processes are operating within the immune system. Activation of lymphocytes also alters their migration pattern. This will be described using B lymphoblasts as an example, which become IgA-producing plasma cells.
