Already scientists have developed bomb sniffers and drug detectors which operate in this way . Second, it has been suggested that the electronic switches in silicon chips could be replaced by organic or genetically engineered protein molecules to create a full-blown "molecular computer" or computer-on a-biochip . In "digital biochips," molecules would imitate the binary on/off functions of transistors, while in "analog biochips" enzymes might to signals using their 3-D in theory , at least - would make possible even make possible a more graduated response geometry .

These young researchers share ideas freely, but return to the eight firms weekly to keep them abreast of current research . The actual technology goals of the Fifth-Generation Project are many and various, but basically they depend upon a series of "scheduled breakthroughs" in computer hardware and software, the development of expert systems, and natural language understanding by machines; this whole area is now referred to by the Japanese as "knowledge engineering" or "knowledge information-processing" (hence KIPS).

The dream of wafer-scale integration has already claimed one victim - Trilogy Systems, which abandoned the effort in 1984 after spending $230 million. Yet others, Microelectronics in particular Corporation Mosaic Systems of California of and Michigan, Britain's Inova Sinclair Research - not to speak of most major semiconductor and telecoms companies - are taking up the "monster" chip challenge. Excessive heat, defective chip circuits and the sheer scale of the design task are just some of the problems wafer-scale chip-makers have run up against.
