Preparing a questionnaire The first step is to construct an initial draft of the questionnaire. It is useful, even at this stage, to think in terms of the variables which will be produced. Certain types of analysis demand numerical rather than categorical variables, for example, so the form a question takes may be partly determined by the type of analysis needed.
We could code the answers to this question in terms of a single variable by merely counting the number of ticks given - 0 to 8 - but this form of coding would clearly not capture the full details of the data available on a completed questionnaire. We might wish, at some future stage, to count the number of respondents who had engaged in each of the individual games.
