This originated a large number of studies in which a wide variety of isotope ratios has been found. For instance in C stars the ratio C 1 2 /C 1 3 varies in the range 3-20 (Kilston 1975, Dominy 1984). Lambert etal. (1986) found that the ratio lies, in general, between 30 and 70. Stars very rich in C 13 are rather exceptional. It seems also that there exists a progression of C 1 2 /C 1 3 ratios from M, MS, S, SC and C stars. Whereas for M stars this ratio is of the order of 13, it is 60 for early C stars.

Adelman and Philip (1992a) later extended this result to all HB stars. Call lines are present in the spectra of supernovae. Ca II and (Call) emission lines are prominent in the nebular phase of supernovae of class II (Branch 1990). The infrared Ca lines can be used to separate RV Tau stars from normal supergiants (Mantegazza 1991).
